EDAPT - INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
Community Health Nursing is a population-focused approach to planning, implementing, and evaluating care
in a wide variety of settings for clients across the lifespan and from diverse backgrounds.
The major goal is to preserve the health of the community by focusing on health promotion and the health
maintenance of individuals, families, and groups within the community. The focus shifts from illness and
episodic (occurring at different intervals, separate events) response to health and identification of at-risk
populations.
The health status of populations across the United States varies greatly, reflecting the severe disproportion of
funding for preventative services and social and economic opportunities.
HEALTH is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. COMMUNITY is a group of individuals
that share a geographic location, common interests, characteristics, values, and goals while POPULATION is a
group of people with common personal or environmental characteristics.

prevent illness and promote health. Considering this social context, health depends on the goals and
performance of individuals, families, communities, and societies.
Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through organized
