Curricular or Instructive Need
An instructional need in my school is training on strategies to increase our learner’s
reading comprehension abilities.
Data
This instructional need was determined by using our monthly Istation assessment scores
(Istation, n.d.). Currently 49% of learners are below grade level in reading comprehension.
According to the data, learners are not showing growth in reading comprehension, in fact their
scores have dropped from the initial test in September where 32% of learners where below grade
level in reading comprehension to 49% in December. The data shows there is a declining trend
on the subtest within Istation and we need to find a way to get learners to improve their reading
comprehension abilities.
Improving School Effectiveness
By addressing the need for training on reading comprehension strategies we will be able
to improve our learner’s reading comprehension abilities and their Istation scores. This will
improve our school effectiveness overall because comprehension is an important part of learning
to read. It adds meaning to what is read, it makes it informative, fun and enjoyable. Reading
comprehension is also needed to be successful in school and beyond. Reading comprehension is
needed for learners to make inferences and draw conclusions, they must be able to think
critically and use context clues to find meaning when reading. Comprehension helps learners to
determine cause and effect, allowing them to make logical connections between events. Reading
comprehension also helps learners make connections to what they are reading by analyzing the
key details and determining the author’s purpose. These are all skills that build upon each other
year after year in each grade.
