Asthma and COPD Treatment
 The most recognized and practiced clinical practice guideline was published in 2007 by the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute, National Asthma Education and Prevention Program, Expert Panel Report 3:
Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. These guidelines advocate for the use of shortacting beta-agonists (SABA) as a "rescue" agent and inhaled corticosteroids for control in mild to moderate
disease.
 A stepwise approach for each level of asthma severity is outlined in the guidelines

 More recently, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines (2020) were published which
recommend a slightly different stepwise approach with the use of an inhaled corticosteroid as the
preferred "rescue" medication, as demonstrated below.
