Asthma and COPD Treatment
The most recognized and practiced clinical practice guideline was published in 2007 by the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute, National Asthma Education and Prevention Program, Expert Panel Report 3:
Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. These guidelines advocate for the use of shortacting beta-agonists (SABA) as a "rescue" agent and inhaled corticosteroids for control in mild to moderate
disease.
A stepwise approach for each level of asthma severity is outlined in the guidelines
at https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/guidelines-for-diagnosis-management-of-asthma.
More recently, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines (2020) were published which
recommend a slightly different stepwise approach with the use of an inhaled corticosteroid as the
preferred "rescue" medication, as demonstrated below.
The GINA guidelines can be accessed at https://ginasthma.org/gina-reports/
