ch. 1 1. What do you learn in this chapter about Maycomb, Atticus Finch and his family? ✔✔Maycomb is a small town in Alabama. Atticus Finch is a lawyer. He has two children, Jem is 10 and Scout is 6. His wife died. They have a housekeeper, Calpurnia. His family owns a large plot of land called Finch Landing. Atticus has two siblings named Jack and Alexandra. They are in the top social class of Maycomb. 2. What do you learn about Dill's character? ✔✔He embellishes his stories. He is very curious. He acts like a big, tough man, but he is actually short and puny. He has blonde hair and blue eyes. He is from Meridia, MS. He stays with his Aunt Rachel in the summer (she's a neighbor). 3. What do you notice about the narrative voice and viewpoint in the novel? ✔✔The story is told through Scout's voice. It is told through 1st person. 4. Why is Scout so looking forward to starting school? ✔✔She wants to be a part of the social aspect, but also learn more. 5. Why does Jem not want anything to do with Scout at school? Is his behavior typical of an older child? ✔✔He is embarrassed. He wants to be cool with his friends, and it is typical. 6. What do you think of Miss Caroline Fisher as a teacher? Can you find qualities that would make her good or not so good at her job? ✔✔She is from northern Alabama. She would be better equipped to teach if she knew Maycomb's culture. She is not a good teacher because she is very strict and not very flexible (reacts very badly to Scout's ability to read, bc she is inexperienced), but she is well educated and means well. ch 3 7. What is Walter Cunningham like? What does his behavior during lunch suggest ✔✔He is from a poor white family, who doesn't take anything he can't payback. You can tell they don't get much to eat, because he eats so quickly. He also pours syrup all over his food. 8. What do you think of the way Atticus treats Walter? ✔✔He has an adult conversation with him. He treats him with the courtesy necessary to be comfortable. 9. Does Scout learn anything from Walter's visit? What do you think this is? ✔✔She learns to treat all guests with same courtesy and fairness, regardless of their background. 10. Atticus says that you never really understand a person "until you climb into his skin and walk around in it". What does this mean? Is it an easy thing for Scout to learn? ✔✔You cant understand someone's life until you live in that situation. This is a hard thing to learn because no one really wants to do it. ch 4 11. Why do the children make Boo's story into a game? ✔✔They make the story real by acting it out and show people they aren't afraid of the Radleys.
