Pneumatology • Know the definition and etymology of Pneumatology, as they were presented in class. o Study of the person and work of Holy Spirit. • Know some reasons why Pneumatology is important and conversely two reasons why we devoted more time to Christology and Theology Proper then to Pneumatology this semester. o More on those in the Bible. o And Baptist belief focuses more on the Father and the Son in the Trinity than the Holy Spirit. That’s their bias. • Jn. 16:13, 14, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me…” Know the four lines of reasoning that support belief in the divinity of the Holy Spirit • Some passages use “Holy Spirit” and “God” interchangeably. • The Holy Spirit has divine attributes. Omniscience: I Cor. 2:10, Isaiah 40:13-14 Eternality: Heb. 9:14 • The Holy Spirit is involved in divine activities. Providence – Psalms 104:30 Regeneration of believers – Titus 3:5 The resurrection of the dead – Romans 8:11 Inspiration of the scriptures – 2 Timothy 3:16 • Some Bible passages list the three persons of the Trinity as equals (e.g. Mt. 28:19). Know the evidence that supports the belief that the Holy Spirit is a person • The Holy Spirit is often referred to using “he” rather than “it”. – John 16:13 • The Holy Spirit’s ministries seem to require personhood (comforter, sanctifier, teacher, communicator, intercessor, guide, and prayer partner). • The Holy Spirit has personality traits, including intelligence (Jn. 14:26), will (I Cor. 12:11), and feelings (Eph. 4:30). • One cannot lie to an impersonal force, but it is possible to lie to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3, 4). The Work of the Holy Spirit: • Know the seven types of work performed by the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament that were discussed in class. o Creation – Genesis 1:2 o Providence 104:26-30 o Inspiration – 2 Peter 1:21 o Provide skills for specific tasks – Exodus 31:3-5 o Skills for administration – Genesis 41:38-40 o Skill at waging war – Judges 6:34 o Instruction – Nehemiah 9:20 • Know the eight types of work performed by the Holy Spirit in the New Testament that were discussed in class o Convicting of sin – John 16:8-11 o Regenerate – John 3:5-6 o Empowering for ministry – John 14:12 o Indwelling – John 14:16-17 o Teaching – John 14:26 o Intercession – Romans 8:26-27 o Sanctifying – Romans 8:1-17, Galatians 5:22-23 o Giving special gifts – 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 Know the biblical lists of miraculous gifts Romans 12:6-8: prophecy, ministry (helping), teaching, exhortation, giving, ruling (administration), and mercy I Cor. 12:8-10: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, working of miracles, prophecy, distinguishing of spirits, tongues (languages), and interpretation of tongues (translation) I Pet. 4:10, 11: speaking, ministry Know the purpose of the miraculous gifts • To authenticate the Gospel message and the early church as the bearer of this message. This is why many call them “sign gifts.” • Heb. 2:3, 4; Acts 2:1-11 (Pentecost); Matt. 11:2-6 Are the Miraculous Gifts for Today? • Know the biblical and rational arguments discussed in class that support belief in the continuance of the “sign gifts.” o Mark 16:15-20 ▪ Indicates that miraculous signs will accompany Christians. o Sign gifts are given to Christians in the Bible. o They appear to be given today. o They are beneficial to the church today, both as signs and blessings. • Know the biblical and rational arguments discussed in class that support the cessationist position toward the “sign gifts.” o 1 Corinthians 13:8-12
