OOM1 Task 1: Collaborating with Team Members to Improve Teaching and LearningMSCIN Program, Western Governors University
Instructional Goal
An English Language Arts instructional goal I have for my 1
st grade learners is: Learners
will be able to use their knowledge of grade-level phonics and word analysis to decode words
when reading and writing.
This instructional goal will support learning by developing my learners reading and
writing skills. They need to be able to use the phonics patterns, sight words, and vocabulary
words we have learned to help them read and write. Phonics is essential for learners to become
successful readers and writers. It teaches them how to decode letters (graphemes) into sounds
that is essential for them to read and encode sounds (phonemes) into letters to write words. This
goal will also support my learners thinking because they will be developing strategies they can
use when they are struggling to read and write. Learner engagement will be supported because
my learners want to be able to read books independently and they want to be able to write
without frustration.
Instructional Strategies
The first instructional strategy I will use to help my learners be successful with the
learning goal will be interactive instruction during small groups. I will use learning games
(strategies) to activate my learners to use their knowledge to meet the instructional goal. We will
play Say It and Move It (Moats, 2022) to work on phoneme segmentation and grapheme
associations. This game will have learners practice saying the sounds of a word while moving
counters in sound boxes. I will demonstrate the activity and they will use their knowledge to
sound out nonsense and real words during the group activity. Then they will practice writing the
words on dry erase boards using the skills they worked on during the activity. During this small

group time, I can work with groups of learners who are similar in reading skills, allowing me to
differentiate the activity to meet every learner’s needs.
