Practical examination This practical examination is to take place between 1 March 2024 and 30 May 2024, by arrangement between the visiting examiner and the centre. A-level DANCE Component 1 Performance and Choreography June 2024 2 IB/G/Jun24/7237/X Section A Answer one question from this section. Choreography Choreograph a dance for three, four or five dancers on one of the following tasks. The dance must be in a live setting and last for a minimum of three and a maximum of four minutes. You must complete a programme note, of no more than 300 words, which outlines your choreographic intention. 0 1 Choreograph a dance based on an exploration of the formal elements of one sculpture created by Laurent Martin “Lo” (born 1955). Please include an image of the chosen sculpture with your programme note. [40 marks] 0 2 Choreograph a dance based on an exploration of the concept of dichotomy. [40 marks] 0 3 Choreograph a dance based on an exploration of the game of chess. [40 marks] In relation to the chosen task and the related dance idea(s), the group choreography should address the following: • selection of the three movement components (ie action, spatial and dynamic elements) • manipulation of the movement components through the use of choreographic devices • structuring of movement material and sectional use of choreographic structures • use of the other constituent features: the aural setting (and physical setting where appropriate) • use of the other constituent features: dancers. 3 IB/G/Jun24/7237/X Section B Answer both question from this section. Performance 0 4 Perform a solo based on the movement style of a specified practitioner. The practitioner must be either the choreographer of one of the prescribed set works or a named practitioner within one of the set areas of study. The dance must be in a live setting and last for a minimum of two and a maximum of three minutes. In relation to the chosen practitioner’s movement style, the dance must allow you to address the following: • precision and control of physical/technical skills • spatial control (personal and stage space) • use of dynamics • interpretative/performance skills in order to communicate the dance idea(s), including timing, musicality, focus, projection, emphasis and expression. [20 marks] You must complete a programme note for your dance, of no more than 150 words. The programme note must identify and provide insight into the movement style of the specified practitioner chosen. This may be written in collaboration with your teacher. 0 5 Perform as part of a quartet, in any dance style relevant to the defined genres in the specification. The quartet must be in a live setting. Your performance must last for a minimum of three minutes and the maximum duration of the complete dance must be no longer than four minutes. In relation to the context of a quartet linked to a chosen style/genre, the dance must allow you to demonstrate the following: • demonstration of physical/technical skills • spatial elements (including sensitivity to other dancers) • interpretative/performance skills including timing, musicality, focus, projection, emphasis and expression.
