CHAPTER 2: INDEX AND CLASSIFICATION PROPERTIES OF SOILS
2.1. Prepare a spreadsheet plot of dry density in kg/m3 as the ordinate versus water content in
percent as the abscissa. Assume ρs = 2750 kg/m3 and vary the degree of saturation, S, from 100%
to 40% in 10% increments. A maximum of 50% water content should be adequate (except for very
soft clays, to be defined shortly). [Note: Such a graph is very useful to check problems that you do
in this chapter, as there is a unique relationship between dry density, water content, and the degree
of saturation for any given density of solids. Void ratio, wet density, and so on are then readily
computed. Similar graphs for density of other solids may be easily computed and plotted.] Show
all your equations as comments on your sheet for future reference.
Solution: Solve Eq. 2.12 and Eq. 2.15 for ρd = f(ρs, ω, S, Gs), or use Eq. 5.1.
ρd =

ρwSe = ωρs (2.15)
