EDAPT MIGRANT HEALTH CASE STUDY
Although a small percentage of the immigrant farmworkers are migrants who follow crop rotations and
harvest times, that group is vulnerable in various health categories (Economic Research Service, 2020).
Communicable diseases within the migrant workers can be difficult to identify, control, and prevent as
multiple communities are involved.
This case study presents the learner with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills in the care of migrant
health workers.
The rural health nurse has been invited to speak with a group of migrant farmworkers who have been
experiencing gastrointestinal health issues for the last 9 months. Review the electronic health record (EHR)
information before answering the question.

Called by local farm manager to provide health information to a group of families working as
migrant farmworkers; families rotate through three counties to assist farms planting and
harvesting crops; families live in accommodations near the fields with private sleeping
quarters, shared kitchens, and shared gender-specific toileting and bathing facilities in all
locations. Over the last 9 months, leaders of the migrant community report frequent
gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, and abdominal
pain; fever is present in some cases, but not others; migrant workers have been impacted in
all locations; local residents are not experiencing the symptoms.
