Instructional Need
A curricular need within my school is better reading comprehension scores throughout
the grade levels (2nd
– 6
th).
Existing data
We have identified this need based on the data that has been taken the past year. Only
40% of students are at or above grade level when it comes to reading comprehension. We have
taken in to account the COVID-19 pandemic. However, our scores were only around 50% prior
to the pandemic. We want this to be at least 80% understanding of reading comprehension by the
time students reach fourth grade.
Specific Examples
One specific example of why improving reading comprehension is effective is that it
helps students understand the meaning behind written words. It is important for students to
understand what they are reading because it applies to every aspect of school. Whether students
are taking a math test or looking at a diagram in science, they need to understand what they are
reading. If they have good reading comprehension, they then have the skills they need to succeed
in all aspects of school.
Another example of why improving reading comprehension is effective is that is helps
students enjoy reading. Students tend to not like reading because it’s “too” hard. If students can
understand what they are reading and like it, then they will enjoy it. If students enjoy reading,
it’ll make school a lot more fun. The reluctant readers will become less and less. Thus,
encouraging better reading comprehension scores.
