Paper 1 – Inorganic and Physical Chemistry Predicted Paper 2023

Name ……………………………………………………………………

Date …………………

1 hour 30 minutes allowed

You should have access to the AQA insert (periodic table and data sheet) to help with answering the questions.

You should spend around 65 minutes on section A and 25 minutes on section B.

Grade boundaries

These are VERY rough guesses! Getting a C on this paper does not guarantee you the same mark in the exam.

A – 80

B – 70

C – 60

D – 50

E - 40

SECTION A

01 The mass spectrum of element A has three peaks. The table below gives the relative abundance of each isotope in a sample of element A.

Isotope Mass number Percentage abundance

1 22 9.25

2 20 90.48

3 21 0.27

01.1

i. Calculate the relative atomic mass of element A.

[2 marks]

ii. Identify the element A.

[1 mark]

iii. Write the electron configuration of element A.

[1 mark]

01.2

i. Explain what is meant by the term “first ionisation energy”?

[3 marks]

ii. “The first ionisation energy of element A is greater than that of fluorine”.

Explain the above statement.

[2 marks]

02 A mass spectrometer can be used to investigate the isotopes in an element.

02.1

i. Element Q has a relative atomic mass of 47.9

Identify the element Q and give electron configuration of an atom of element Q.

[2 marks]

ii. Calculate the mass, in kg, of one atom of 47Q. (The Avogadro constant L= 6.022×1023 mol-1)

[2 marks]

iii. In a time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometer the time of flight, t, of an ion is shown by the equation.

????

???? = ????

2????

In this equation d is the length of the flight tube. m is the mass in kg of an ion.

E is the kinetic energy of the ions.

The kinetic energy of an ion in the flight tube

= 1.235×10-12 J.

The time of flight of a 47Q + ion is 8.945×10-7 s Calculate the time of flight of the 48Q+

[3 marks]

Time of flight = s

02.2 Describe how the ions are formed in a time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometer.

[2 marks]

03 A chemist carries out an experiment to investigate the enthalpy change of reaction, ΔHr, for the reaction below.

NaCO3(s)+ 2HCl(aq)  2NaCl(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(g)

4.24 g of Na2CO3 is added to 25.0 g of 3.00 moldm-3 HCl in excess. The temperature of the reaction mixture increases by 3.5°C.

The specific heat capacity of the reaction mixture is 4.18 Jg-1K-1.

03.1 Calculate the ΔHr in kJmol-1

[4 marks]

ΔHr = kJmol-1

03.2 For many compounds the enthalpy change of formation cannot be calculated directly. An indirect method based on enthalpy change of combustion can be used.

i. Explain the meaning of the term standard enthalpy change of combustion.

[3 marks]
